The search for a Tom Brady-like replacement at quarterback for the Patriots has seen another victim, with Mac Jones falling down the pecking order.
Jones was highly touted coming into Green Bay in the 2021 first round draft, but after an iffy start was benched in the final third of the season.
New England may see a new head coach with Bill Belichick facing the axe and whether that will make a difference to Jones remains to be seen.
If Bill could not get the best out if the promising player, then he will likely follow the multi Superbowl winning HC out if Green Bay.
“Obviously I have a lot of respect for the people in this locker room, and that’s where it starts,” Jones told Khari Thompson of Boston.com.
Jones was a Pro Bowler in his first season in 2021 bit suffered from injury and a lack of form in 2022.
“I feel like I let people down with my play. A lot of that stuff is in my control and some of it is not. So, I’m going to do everything I can for my next opportunity whether that’s here and really just push forward and continue to be Mac. That’s what it’s all about. Don’t let that waver.”
Jones had a poor start to the 2023 season and by week 11 was replaced by Bailey Zappe for the remainder of the season.
In week 10, Jones was sacked five times in the first half against the Colts.
Jones was replaced by Zappe on a few occasions earlier in the season including a week 4 loss to the Cowboys which saw the former Alabama Crimson Tide line caller getting a 39.9 passer rating.
The Patriots finished bottom of the AFC East with a 4-13 record.
