On Monday night, Michigan football seeks its second national championship since 1948 and first since 1997 as they face Washington in the College Football Playoff title game in Houston. The 2023 season, marked by on-field success, has also been turbulent due to off-field controversies.

Michigan’s dominance on the field and alleged off-field misdeeds have made them a central storyline. Despite an undefeated regular season and a third-consecutive Big Ten championship, the team faced unsavory headlines, particularly regarding an ongoing NCAA investigation into in-person scouting and sign stealing, which surfaced on October 19.

While Michigan continued winning and chasing their national title dream, the sign-stealing scandal cast a shadow. Coach Jim Harbaugh was suspended for several games, and even upon his return, the scandal was referenced as the “adversity” the team endured. The investigation centers on alleged violations of NCAA Bylaw 11.6.1, prohibiting off-campus, in-person scouting of future opponents, especially using technology.

Connor Stalions, a former off-field analyst for Michigan, is central to the scandal. He allegedly purchased tickets to over 35 games at 17 stadiums across the country to scout upcoming opponents. Twelve Big Ten schools confirmed Stalions bought tickets to their games. The NCAA’s involvement began when an outside firm provided computer drives containing evidence of illicit scouting maintained by multiple Michigan coaches.

Harbaugh denies knowledge of the alleged sign-stealing, asserting that their scouting adheres to the rules. While the impact of the alleged operation on Michigan’s success remains unclear, insiders believe it could have provided a significant advantage, with one Power Five head coach describing it as “the biggest advantage in college football.” The controversy adds complexity to an already memorable season for the Wolverines.
