The NBA has entered the fray in talks to take a stake in ESPN, joining the NFL in competing for a share.
Michael McCarthy of the Front Office Sports believes the NBA are “very much still in play” to pick up a piece in the international broadcaster.
Just last week Andrew Marchand of the New York Post said the NFL was in “advanced talks” to acquire a stake in ESPN.
The one aspect in favor of the NBA is that Warner Bros Discovery owns the rights to the NBA cable network, app and website, and a deal with ESPN could see a change of creative control.
The NFL have recently signed a broadcast dela with ESPN until 2032 while the NBA are in negotiation for broadcasting rights.
McCarthy admits both leagues could get involved and share the cake, while sports betting operators, Google, Amazon or even private equity firms could also take a large slice.
