Sean Strickland to face tough first UFC middleweight title defense against Dricus du Plessis in bad-blood encounter

The middleweight title fight between holder Sean Strickland and Dricus du Plessis will play out at UFC 297 in Canada this weekend.

There had been plenty of bad blood going onto this matchup, but the abrasive Strickland and the South African has eased.

The build-up has seen death threats, bringing up of childhood trauma and homophobic slurs in what is becoming a norm ahead of pay per view UFC bouts.

Strickland is the defending champion after defeating Israel Adesanya on points.

Du Plessis won his last fight against the ‘Reaper’ Robert Whittaker in impressive fashion, finishing off the fight with some terrific punched and ground and pound.

Strickland, known for his loudmouth and constant bantering is a forward moving fighter who often exposes his chin while Du Plessis is a more rounded fighter, with grappling, wrestling and striking skills.

Du Plessis is aiming to become South Africa’s first UFC champion.

The Scotiabank Arena in Toronto will see a lively encounter as Strickland aims for his first defense.
