However, the uncertainty has been dispelled this week with the affirmation that Austin will continue his tenure at Pittsburgh under a new agreement.
According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Austin and the Steelers have reportedly inked a two-year deal, securing Austin’s place within the organization until it expires.
This good news will see the esteemed Austin venturing into his third year as the leader of the offense, extending his notable six-year tenure with the team.
Prior to his current role, Austin served as a senior defensive assistant and defensive backs coach for three years.
Under his guidance, the team witnessed a substantial advancement in their defensive performance.
This improvement fell nothing short of remarkable, with the team ranking 10th in points allowed during Austin’s first season.
Even more impressively, the Steelers soared to a commendable sixth position on their journey to the postseason in 2023.
However, while the Steelers community rejoices over Austin’s two-year contract renewal, changes are set to befall the team’s defensive coaching staff.
As reported by Cameron Wolfe of NFL Media, Gerald Alexander, the assistant defensive backs coach, is leaving his position with the team.
Alexander has reportedly accepted an offer to join the Las Vegas Raiders as their safeties coach. No doubt, Alexander’s exit presents a void in the Steelers’ coaching line-up.
Yet, whether this change will negatively impact the team’s defensive performance or pave the way for a fresh, dynamic approach remains to be seen.
