“Dak has done nothing to change my mind about any promise for the future,” Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Aims to Extend QB Prescott‘s Contract Despite heftier cap hit of $59.5 million

Dak Prescott, the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, has been instrumental in the team’s victories.

For the third consecutive straight season, he has been a significant contributor to the team’s triumphant 12-games win.

Heading towards the peak of his career, Prescott had also won a top-five finish in the MVP (Most Valuable Player) voting.

Over his eight seasons, the Cowboys have marked an impressive 73-41 in the regular season.

Despite their regular-season victories, the Cowboys have seen a disappointing 2-5 in postseason games.

These figures somewhat taint the team’s otherwise strong performance record during the regular season.

Prescott’s contract comes with a heftier cap hit of $59.5 million for the upcoming season. With the Cowboys projected to be nearly $19 million over the 2024 salary cap, lowering Prescott’s cap hit becomes a necessary move.

“Dak has done nothing to change my mind about any promise for the future,” says Jerry Jones, the Cowboys’ owner. “I think I’ve said in the deal that we will go as far as Dak takes us in the playoffs. Remember that. We will go as far as Dak takes us, and that is how far we went. So my point is, that doesn’t change a thing. We’ll go as far as Dak takes us.”

A contract extension seems the easiest route to lessen the burden of Prescott’s high cap hit. However, this move would also take an average salary in the estimated $50 million range and multi-year dedication from both sides.

This time a year ago, Jerry Jones was hopeful and enthusiastic about the plan to sign Prescott to a long-term contract extension.

Currently, though, he is evading discussions about the same. Prescott’s current contract includes a no-trade and no-franchise tag clause effective from 2025.

This implies that if the Cowboys fail to conclude a contract extension before next March, Prescott will step into free arena.

The Cowboys’ team management also has to consider long-term contracts for key players like receiver CeeDee Lamb and edge rusher Micah Parsons.

A contract extension for Prescott could potentially simplify these commitments, making them more plausible financially.

In spite of the uncertainty surrounding his continuation with the Cowboys, Prescott’s career has taken a soaring flight.

In 2024, he registered 4,516 passing yards, a league-high 36 touchdowns, and maintained a commendable 105.9 passer rating with just nine interceptions.
