Iowa’s basketball sensation Caitlin Clark climbs to No. 2 on NCAA women’s all-time scoring list

Iowa’s basketball sensation, Caitlin Clark, achieved another milestone on Wednesday night at Northwestern, securing the second spot on the NCAA women’s all-time scoring list.

The Naismith women’s college player of the year for the 2022-23 season, Clark surpassed former Ohio State star Kelsey Mitchell’s record of 3,402 points with a layup in the second quarter. Clark, who already claimed the title of the Big Ten’s all-time leading scorer, finished the game with 35 points, marking her fifth consecutive 30-point game and matching her career-long streak.

Now boasting 3,424 career points, Clark eyes the NCAA’s all-time scoring record of 3,527, held by Washington’s Kelsey Plum. Despite lamenting her shooting struggles in the recent game, Clark expressed gratitude for being mentioned alongside legendary players: “The coolest thing is just the names I get to be around. Those are people I grew up watching, especially Brittney Griner, Kelsey Mitchell, those are really, really good players, people that are still playing our game at the very highest level.”

In addition to her scoring prowess, Clark contributed 10 assists, six rebounds, two steals, and a block. Iowa’s head coach, Lisa Bluder, praised her outstanding performance and noted, “With this many games to go, overtaking somebody the caliber of Kelsey Mitchell is outstanding.”

Clark’s remarkable achievements extend beyond scoring, as she became Iowa’s all-time leader in points, assists, and 3-pointers made. Averaging 32.1 points per game, she is on pace to break Plum’s scoring record on Feb. 15 against Michigan.

As Clark continues to rewrite the record books, her impact on and off the court remains a source of inspiration for fans and teammates alike.
