“I was barely hanging on” Calvin Johnson Opens Up on NFL Challenges, Admits to Using ‘Marijuana’ for Mental Wellness

Calvin Johnson, better known also as “Megatron,” was a superstar even before he was drafted to the NFL. The hype and publicity surrounding the former Georgia Tech receiver was incredible when he declared for the draft. Since the 1984 draft, only one wide receiver has been drafted as the first overall pick (Keyshawn Johnson). Calvin Johnson was drafted number two behind only JaMarcus Russell. No WR since has been drafted as high.

Despite never winning a Super Bowl or a playoff game during his career, Johnson proved himself as an elite receiver in the NFL and was selected to the Pro Bowl on six different occasions. That, however, took a toll on the young receiver.

In a recent interview Johnson opened up about his struggles in the NFL and using marijuana before games.

“There were some games in my career, man, where I was like ‘I don’t know if I’m gonna make it today.'”

Calvin Johnson was speaking with Robert Griffin III on the RG3 and The Ones podcast and talked about playing high during games. He did say that he only used marijuana to get his “mind right” during the final year of his career.

“I was barely hanging on,” added Johnson.

Over an illustrious nine-year career, Johnson finished with an incredible 11619 yards for the Detroit Lions. He had a total of 731 catches, 83 touchdowns, averaged 15.9 reception yards per catch and even managed a rushing touchdown

He eventually retired the age of 30 after 135 games in the NFL.
