“Open up to women” – NFL HOFer O.J. Simpson’s awkward response to ‘Confession’ joke is reminiscent of his murder trial

In a recent episode of the ‘It Is What It Is" podcast NFL icon OJ Simpson was middle of an awkward conversation when asked about trust in relationships between men and women.

This was in the context of NBA legend Shaquille O"Neal offering a piece of advice during last week"s episode of The Big Podcast with Shaq.

O"Neal strongly said that men should avoid opening up to women in relationships. According to him, sharing personal feelings or information with a woman could lead to negative consequences in the future.

O"Neal explained his stance, stating, “Open up to a woman? Never. Because once you do, whenever something goes down, they"re gonna throw it back in your face. That"s why. So, you can"t ever."

‘It Is What It Is" podcast panel revisited Shaquille O’Neal’s remarks and asked O.J. to come up with his opinion.

To which O.J. Simpson expressed confusion about O"Neal"s statement, particularly regarding the term “open up to women." He questioned whether it referred to confessing and advised against it, aligning with O"Neal"s perspective.

Simpson urged men not to reveal too much and to avoid confessions, stating, “Don’t say nothing … leave me out of the confession."

OJ Simpson"s response was particularly awkward because of his infamous murder trial.

In 1994, O.J. Simpson was accused of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman. The trial lasted for eleven months and concluded on October 3, 1995, with Simpson being acquitted of both murder charges.

Simpson"s arrest, marked by a slow-speed chase in a white Ford Bronco also interrupted TV coverage of the 1994 NBA Finals.

Despite Simpson"s acquittal in the criminal trial, a subsequent civil suit found him responsible for the deaths, resulting in a $33.5 million judgment, though he has only paid a fraction of that sum.

In 2000, Simpson moved to Florida, where his assets are protected from seizure to cover liabilities incurred in other states.

Nicole Brown and O.J. Simpson"s relationship began in 1977 when she was 18 and he was 30. Despite Simpson being married at the time, they started dating, leading to Simpson filing for divorce from his first wife in 1979.

The couple married in 1985 and had two children, Sydney and Justin. However, their marriage was marred by domestic abuse, with Brown experiencing various forms of violence and intimidation.

Brown filed for divorce in 1992, citing irreconcilable differences. After the divorce, she claimed that Simpson continued to stalk and harass her, causing her to fear for her life.

On June 8, 1994, Brown contacted a women"s shelter, expressing concern about Simpson"s behavior. Shortly after, Brown and Ron Goldman were found murdered, and Simpson was arrested with Brown"s missing house keys in his possession.

The ‘ It Is What It Is" podcast also took an awkward turn when they delved into the topic of ‘Confession," particularly in light of O.J. Simpson"s controversial book, ‘If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer."

It"s this hypothetical narrative where Simpson talks about how he might have committed the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman.

Back in 2006, HarperCollins initially announced they were going to publish the book, but due to public outrage over Simpson potentially profiting from such a heinous crime, they decided to pull the plug.

However, in August 2007, a Florida bankruptcy court granted the rights of the book to the Goldman family as part of satisfying a civil judgment. They went on to tweak the title to ‘If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer" and Beaufort Books took charge of the publication.

The cover design played a sneaky visual trick, with the word “If" significantly smaller and nestled within the larger “I," making the title appear as “I Did It: Confessions of the Killer" unless you scrutinize it closely.
