Why does Clayton Kershaw wear Skechers on the mound? Dodgers legend clowned by Mookie Betts for unusual choice in footwear

Over the past decade, few players have been as dominant as Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw. While it’s hard not to notice Kershaw’s signature sneakers, his Skechers shouldn’t be ignored either.

Luckily, Dodgers pitcher/outfielder Mookie Betts asked his teammate to explain his shoes during a podcast interview.

“You know how much confidence you have wearing Skechers on the mound?”

Kershaw laughed before explaining his opening line,

“They’re awesome.”

“So, I was satisfied for a few years after that and continued to try their new products from time to time.”

He approached Skechers and they said,

“Hey, we can make him a designer.”

“And indeed, they did, and surprisingly.”

Betts questioned whether Kershaw’s decision was based on comfort. Kershaw defended his shoe, saying,

“Hey, I think the cleats look good.”

“Kershaw’s low-top style is working in Major League Baseball.” They wanted to give it a try.

Kershaw cited Wade Miley of the Milwaukee Brewers as an example. Fortunately for the Los Angeles home team Milwaukee, Kershaw and Miley will start tonight.

Sneakerheads should know about their unique Skechers silhouettes.

Ahead of the 2019 Los Angeles Dodgers season, Clayton Kershaw and Skechers announced a multi-year partnership that will bring the three-time Cy Young Award winner to the men’s work and athletic footwear market.

Kershaw has also collaborated with Skechers on several styles, including his own baseball uniform that he has worn since his first season.

The lefty was wearing Under Armor sneakers and explained why he switched to Skechers while appearing on the ‘On Base with Mookie Betts’ podcast.

“I’ve been wearing Under Armor my whole career, but they stopped repairing the boots, so I’ve had enough for a few years, and now I’m still trying to get new boots.”

“I said no.”

It was a year.

The guy who helped me was Bill, he contacted Skechers, and they said,

“We can make you boots.”

Well, they did it, and they did it well.

Skechers currently makes sneakers exclusively for Kershaw. But the 35-year-old believes the company will be successful if it tries to produce the boots more widely, saying he has been approached by a number of players who want to try them out.

“I think Spike is really cool. It looks really cool. … It’s really cool and the design seems to get better every year. If you want to get into baseball, I think Skechers can do it.”

Manhattan Beach, Calif based Skechers received additional funding for its environmental partnerships when Kershaw accepted a new advertising contract.

He said at the time,

“All of our work is done here in Los Angeles, so we’re very excited to be working with Skechers, an original Los Angeles brand since 1992.”

In addition to offering a line of jerseys and training shoes, Skechers has agreed to sponsor Kershaw’s Challenge’s annual PingPong4Purpose charity event held each summer at Dodger Stadium.
