“This is just not okay” NHL Star Patrik Laine Takes Leave for Mental Health, Speaks Out Against Controversial Podcast Remark

Patrik Laine’s struggles with mental health have shined a light on the issue and the difficulties professional athletes face. The NHL, like any other professional league, is extremely demanding and the day-to-day pressure on players is immense.

Columbus Blue Jackets star Patrik Laine recently stepped away from the game to focus on his mental health. The 25-year-old forward posted a message on Instagram explaining his absence:

“I have recognized the importance of prioritizing my mental health and well-being…I have come to realize that in order to perform at my best, I need to take this time to focus on myself.”

The decision to sit out has led to a range of opinions but one opinion from the B&B’s Round Table Podcast seemed to irk the NHL star. “Laine’s out because he was contemplating a Remington retirement,” said one member of the podcast.

Laine responded on to the controversial reference to suicide with a post on his X account stating “This is just not okay.”

Reports circulated last month that Laine would be entering the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program.

Since his trade to the Columbus Blue Jackets from the Winnipeg Jets in 2021, Laine has struggled with injuries. He has not played since December 15 when he suffered a clavicle fracture against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Overall he has appeared in just 18 games this season scoring six goals and recording three assists.

The Blue Jackets have dropped down the standings this season without one of their top players. The team is currently last in the Eastern Conference with a 16-25 record.
