Gerrit Cole is keeping his eye on the prize. The reigning American League Cy Young award winner’s message was crystal clear. The goal for the New York Yankees this year is World Series number 28.
Speaking to the press, Cole made his intentions clear for the 2024 season with the New York Yankees aim to break their 15-year championship drought.
The right-handed pitcher won his first-ever Cy Young last season after 11 seasons in the majors. It was a historic milestone for the 33-year-old who has put up big numbers year after year. Cole, however, is not focused on personal accolades. Asked about repeating as the AL Cy Young, the pitcher was focused on one target.
“We’re going to go out there and prepare to win a world championship,” said Cole.
Gerrit Cole speaks on the idea of adding another Cy Young Award to his resume:
"It's not on the goal list and it wasn't on the goal list any year… With that said, we're going to go out there and prepare to win a world championship, that's really on the top of the list." pic.twitter.com/5gFGIAVXvm

General manager Brian Cashman has added some key pieces this offseason to compliment an already talented lineup. Dominican outfielder Juan Soto was brought over in a blockbuster trade with the San Diego Padres. Two-time All-Star Marcus Stroman will add experience to a starting rotation that includes Cole, Nestor Cortes and Carlos Rodon. Alex Verdugo and Trent Grisham add depth to a star-studded offense.
Cole was outstanding during the 2023 season. The Yankees ace finished the year with a 15-4 record and a meagre 2.63 ERA. He had an impressive .98 WHIP and struck out 222 hitters over 209 innings.
The Yankees will look to bounce back after a disappointing 82-80 season that saw them finish fourth in the American League East. Aaron Boone and the team seem to be all in on the 2024 season with the Bronx Bombers aim to win their first World Series since 2009.
