Pete Alonso will commit $1000 to animal shelters every time the New York Mets slugger goes yard. The three-time All-Star announced the generous donation on Saturday stating that he was “really excited” about the initiative set up through the Alonso Foundation.
Alonso provided some insight into the project stating that the funds would be used to help get animals, particularly dogs, out of kill shelters. The donations will be made to several rescues for transport, beds, blankets, and other supplies.
“Hopefully there’s a lot of homers and we get to save a lot of animals,” said Alonso

The majority of the offseason talk surrounding Alonso has related to his Mets contract, which is set to run out at the end of the year. The 29-year-old has spent his entire five-year MLB career with the New York Mets and has been with the organization since he was drafted in 2016. After a disappointing 2023 season, the club has shed several high-profile players and hefty contracts over the previous year as they look to rebuild. It remains unclear whether the Mets will re-sign the first baseman who is adored by the fanbase.
The $1000 donation to animal shelters is a honourable cause from a player that is known for his work with charities.
Last season, the powerful righty recorded 46 home runs. The year before that, he finished with 40 home runs. His best season came during his 2019 rookie season where Alonso finished with a whopping 52 home runs in 161 games. He led the league in home runs that season and was named National League Rookie of the Year.
