A new chapter in sports documentaries is set to unfold with the premiere of ‘The Marvelous Journey,’ a feature-length documentary chronicling Giannis Antetokounmpo’s illustrious journey.

“I don’t play basketball for the money, the fame; I only play because I wanted to change my family’s life,” Giannis Antetokounmpo says in the trailer for his upcoming documentary, Giannis: The Marvelous Journey, released by Prime Video on Wednesday.

From his early life in Athens, Greece, to becoming an NBA champion, the film delves into the true American immigrant tale that defines Giannis.

The narrative begins in 1991 when Charles and Veronica Antetokounmpo made the daring journey from Nigeria to Greece, seeking a brighter future for their family.

The hopes and dreams of the parents found realization when Giannis, born in Athens on December 6, 1994, made a significant move in the 2013 NBA draft.

Giannis’s entry into the NBA came on July 30, 2013, when he signed his rookie contract with the Milwaukee Bucks.

His association with the Bucks has remained throughout his professional career and led them to their first NBA championship since 1971 in 2021.

‘The Marvelous Journey’ serves as more than just a sports documentary. It paints a vivid picture of an athlete’s incredible resilience, enduring racism as an African immigrant in Greece, braving the challenging journey to America with his family in 2014, and dealing with his father’s unexpected death in 2017.

“I don’t want to play no more,” Giannis says of his feelings at the time of his father’s death in the trailer. “I don’t want to play no more.”

The documentary also offers intimate insights from the player affectionately known as “the Greek Freak”.

His mother, Veronica, and brothers Thanasis, Kostas, and Alex Antetokounmpo make appearances, alongside Giannis’s fiancée, Mariah Riddlesprigger.

A roster of fellow NBA pros including Jason Kidd, Khris Middleton, Jrue Holiday, Kenny Smith, Vin Baker, and Ernie Johnson also feature in the film, enriching the narrative with their unique perspectives.

This documentary is not the first Hollywood venture to showcase Giannis’s inspiring journey.

In 2022, Disney released ‘Rise’, a biographical sports drama based on the Antetokounmpo brothers’ gripping true story.

Kristen Lappas, an Emmy winner, not only directs but also produces ‘Giannis: The Marvelous Journey.’

The executive producers include Aaron Cohen, Libby Geist, Nick Monroe, and Giorgos Panou, with Connor Schell and Hannah Beir contributing as additional producers.
