On Tuesday, Kevin Ollie stepped into the role of interim head coach for the Brooklyn Nets just a day after the team parted ways with head coach Jacque Vaughn.

Ollie, renowned for his coaching stint with the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team, brings a wealth of experience to the table. As one of only four African American coaches to secure an NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship, Ollie’s impressive background includes a 13-season career as a player across twelve NBA franchises.

Kevin Ollie: Breakdown of His NBA Career

  • 2004–2008: Philadelphia 76ers
  • 2008–2009: Minnesota Timberwolves
  • 2009–2010: Oklahoma City Thunder

Retiring from professional basketball in 2010, Ollie transitioned to coaching and joined UConn as an assistant coach and took over the head coaching position in 2012.

During his tenure, Ollie led the Huskies to a victory in the 2014 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship against top-ranked Florida.

However, Ollie’s coaching journey faced a setback in 2018 when he was fired from UConn following an NCAA investigation. The probe resulted in a three-year show cause order and penalties for the university, with Ollie filing a grievance seeking $10 million in back pay. A turning point occurred on January 20, 2022, when an arbitrator ruled in Ollie’s favor, stating that UConn unjustly terminated him and ordering the university to provide back pay.

On April 12, 2021, Ollie took on a new role as the head of coaching and basketball development with Overtime Elite. Later, on June 3, 2023, news broke that Ollie would be joining the Brooklyn Nets as an assistant coach under Jacque Vaughn. With the recent firing of Vaughn during the 2024 NBA All-Star break, the Nets wasted no time in promoting Ollie to the interim head coaching position.

As the Nets navigate the remainder of the season, all eyes will be on Kevin Ollie as he takes charge and steers the team through the challenges that lie ahead.
