The MLS Players Association is urging a quick resolution to the lockout of the league’s referees, warning that using replacement officials could put players’ health at risk. They believe the focus should be on the upcoming season’s excitement, not labor disputes.
The use of replacement referees, according to the MLSPA, will not only affect the quality of matches but could also endanger players. They argue that fair wages, safe conditions, and the right to negotiate are essential for all workers.
Major League Soccer's 2024 season will begin this week with replacement refs after the referees' union rejected a tentative CBA.
The union's referees—including NWSL and USL officials, too—are now locked out as the spring season approaches.

They’re calling for all parties to come back to the table and reach a fair agreement promptly. The Professional Referee Organization (PRO) locked out MLS referees after their union, the Professional Soccer Referees Association (PSRA), rejected a proposed labor deal.
The PSRA says the rejection was due to concerns about compensation, benefits, and other quality-of-life issues. They highlight that replacement officials lack the experience and fitness needed for the job, emphasizing the importance of referees who understand MLS rules and the game’s nuances.
MLS says the proposed agreement would have made their referees some of the highest-paid in the world.
