Pitching a question that"s gained significant attention, Stephen A. Smith, an esteemed sports commentator, recently questioned why Notre Dame is “even relevant" in college football.

His query came up during ESPN"s “First Take", a televised space for experts to share insights and controversies about sports.

In the discussion about the new College Football Playoff format, Smith, in a conversation with colleagues Paul Finebaum and Chris “Mad Dog" Russo.

Pointed out that the prided Golden Domers’ program frequently enters the discussions despite having not tasted victory in a considerably extended period.

"The Notre Dame Fighting Irish in college football has not won a championship since 1988. Ladies and gentlemen, if my math is correct that"s 36 years without a national championship. … 36 years ago, Doggie, I was graduating from high school. I had an afro, [my] hairline was two feet forward. … That"s how long ago that was the last time these brothers was relevant. … Don"t get me wrong … the Fighting Irish is the Fighting Irish. It"s a prestigious university, I get it… But what the hell have they done"?

Under the supervision of seasoned coaches like Brian Kelly, Charlie Weis, and Tyrone Willingham, the Notre Dame football team has celebrated several 10+ win seasons.

However, they"ve fallen short when it comes to clinching national titles, with their last crowning success dating back to the leadership of Lou Holtz.

Notre Dame"s reputation is etched firmly into the fabric of college football, their brand iconic and undeniably powerful.

However, the stark reality highlights a different narrative. The once triumphant team hasn"t been a formidable force in today"s college football era.

One possible reason for this might be Notre Dame"s decision to stay independent. Not being part of a conference means they lack conference titles, essentially a unique selling proposition most teams flaunt.

Additionally, their strength of schedule isn"t a remarkable highlight either. These factors might be hindering Notre Dame"s relevance in current college football conversations.
