A new head coach and coordinators could lead to sweeping changes for the New England Patriots.
The Patriots named Alex Van Pelt as their new offensive coordinator earlier this year and it will be interesting to see how he molds an offense that has struggled since losing MVP quarterback Tom Brady back in 2020. Van Pelt spent four seasons with the Cleveland Browns coaching some of the game’s top players including Deshaun Watson, Nick Chubb, and Amari Copper. Unfortunately, the New England roster does not offer the same level of weapons.
Alex Van Pelt will also be assigned with calling plays for the first time in the NFL. His previous head coach Kevin Stefanski was responsible for play-calling in Cleveland. The newly-appointed coordinator opened up on his new role and how he plans to build this roster.
“I’m excited about doing it. I got to call a whole season in NFL Europe,” said Van Pelt per NFL.com
The European league is vastly different from the unforgiving NFL and Van Pelt will have to adjust quickly if he hopes to get off to a strong start.
Asked about retaining former first-rounder Mac Jones at the quarterback position the coach did not give up much.
“Really right now, everything is on the table,” said Van Pelt. “We’re trying to understand who we have here, as well as looking at other players out there. I think the best thing for everybody is it’s going to be a fresh start.”
After another underwhelming season, it would not be surprising for the Patriots to move on from Mac Jones. The Pats hold the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL draft behind the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders. The issue is that both those teams are also rumored to be interested in a quarterback.
