In a recent interview on the “Club Shay Shay” show with NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe, ex-NFL QB Johnny Manziel opened up about his time with the Cleveland Browns, expressing remorse for his behavior towards LeBron James and Cavaliers Marketing Manager, Maverick Carter.
Firstly, Manziel acknowledged the support he received from Skip Bayless, who once touted him as potentially surpassing LeBron James in fame.
Next, Manziel recounted how LeBron James reached out to him, inviting him to hang out, but his struggles with mental health prevented him from accepting those offers. He also expressed regret for not fully embracing the opportunity to be mentored by James.
Reflecting on his past, Manziel admitted that he let down James and Carter by not living up to expectations and showing blatant disrespect during his stint with the Cleveland Browns.
“The thing that I realize now is the reason why they’re probably still pissed at me to this day,” Manziel said. “And what I did and the way I carried myself and the way that I was in my time during Cleveland was pure and blatant disrespect to them giving me everything that I could have ever needed to be successful.
Now, at 31, Manziel hopes for a chance to apologize to James, Carter, and others tied to him during his tumultuous time with the Cleveland Browns.
Taking a trip down memory lane, Manziel’s tenure with the Browns in the 2014 and 2015 seasons was marked by ups and downs. Drafted as the 22nd overall pick in 2014, his on-field performances were inconsistent, and off-field issues, including partying and a domestic violence investigation, led to his eventual release in March 2016.
Also, Johnny Manziel’s marketing agency LRMR, run by Maverick Carter and owned by LeBron James, announced the termination of its formal business relationship with the ex-quarterback just two months before his release from the Browns. As reported by CBS News in January 2016, Carter cited the need for Manziel to focus on personal growth.
