Former MLB centre fielder Carlos Gomez, known for his blazing speed on the baseball diamond, is now aiming for speed on the cycling track as he seeks to qualify for the 2024 Olympics. Transitioning from baseball to track cycling, Gómez is intensively training and consuming a whopping 7,000 calories daily to maintain his weight due to the rigorous demands of his new sport.
At 33–40 years old, considered the “masters” category in cycling, Gómez relies on his powerful lower body, honed through years of sprinting prowess on the baseball field, to excel in Aqsprint events. Despite facing a neck injury that led him to give up MMA training and focus solely on cycling, Gómez draws from his judo background as a youngster, warning opponents not to underestimate his ground game.
Carlos Gomez is currently training for the Paris Olympics in cycling — no joke. If he wins a qualifying race in May it sounds like he will have the chance to represent the Dominican Republic in the 500 meters in the velodrome.
With the way he ran the bases, no surprise!

With a May qualifier on the horizon, Gómez aims to represent his native Dominican Republic in Paris, where the nation’s cycling presence has historically been overshadowed by other sports like baseball and boxing. Despite his baseball achievements, including two All-Star selections and impressive batting averages during his MLB career, Gómez is now pursuing a new athletic challenge with hopes of Olympic glory in cycling.
