Masters Dinner 2023: Exploring the Menu and Stories Behind Augusta’s Epicurean Tradition

Jon Rahm will have the honor of setting the Masters Champions Dinner menu in 2024. He has already started planning the menu and will be working with his friend, Chef Jose Andres.

Rahm also wants to consult with fellow Spaniard, Jose Maria Olazabal, to gather ideas. So far, he has decided on Jamon as an appetizer, but the rest of the menu is still undecided.

The defending champion has the honor of setting the Masters Champions Dinner menu. A tradition started by Ben Hogan in 1952, the previous year’s winner hosts the Champions Dinner in Augusta’s clubhouse on the Tuesday night of tournament week and gets to choose the entire menu.

As the tradition goes, each member — clad in their iconic green jacket, of course — gathers to enjoy a menu selected by the defending champion that typically represents either the cuisine of the champion’s home or his personal culinary favorites.

Previous Champions Dinners have featured a variety of delicious dishes.

In 2023, Scottie Scheffler served Cheeseburger Sliders and Firecracker Shrimp as appetizers, followed by Tortilla Soup and a main course of Texas Ribeye Steak or Blackened Redfish.

For dessert, there was Warm Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie with Milk and Cookies Ice Cream.

Hideki Matsuyama’s menu in 2022 included Assorted Sushi, Sashimi, and Yakitori Chicken Skewers as starters. The main course was Miyazaki Wagyu and A5 Wagyu Beef Ribeye, accompanied by Mixed Mushrooms & Vegetables and Sansho Daikon Ponzu.

Dessert options were Japanese Strawberry Cheesecake or Fluffy Sponge Cake with Whipped Cream and Amaou Strawberries.

Dustin Johnson’s 2021 menu featured a choice of garden salad or Caesar salad, followed by a main course of prime filet mignon or miso marinated sea bass.

Peach cobbler and apple pie with vanilla ice cream were served for dessert.

Tiger Woods’ 2020 menu included an Augusta Roll of tempura shrimp, spicy tuna, and avocado as a starter. The main course consisted of prime steak and chicken fajitas, and the dessert trio included classi fan, churros with chocolate sauce, and sopapillas.

The menu was a far cry from what a 21-year-old Tiger brought to his first Masters Club dinner in 1997.

Patrick Reed’s 2019 menu offered a choice of Caesar salad or Wedge salad, followed by a main course of Prime Bone-In Cowboy Rib Eye. The sides included macaroni and cheese, creamed spinach, corn creme brulee, and steamed broccoli.

For dessert, there were options like Tiramisu, vanilla bean creme brulee, and chocolate crunch and praline cheesecake.

Each year, the Masters Champion has the privilege of selecting the menu for the Champions Dinner, and Jon Rahm is taking this responsibility seriously.

He is seeking input from renowned chefs and former champions to create a memorable dining experience for the world’s best golfers.
