The indecision follows changes made in the team’s play-calling responsibility in the previous season.
Before the 2023 season, Doug Pederson made a significant change to the Jaguars’ offensive play-calling operation.
Offense coordinator Press Taylor was asked to bear the play-calling burden after sharing the responsibility with Pederson during the 2022 season.
When addressing reporters from the Scouting Combine in recent days, Pederson indicated that he holds Taylor in high esteem.
“My belief in Taylor really is high,” said Pederson.
“It’s something that’s part of the evaluation process,” Pederson said, via the team’s website. “I have to evaluate myself and Press as decision-makers and play-callers and see what’s best for our team. I haven’t decided, but those are all ongoing conversations that Press and I will have and go from there.”
However, the pressing question remains whether he will maintain the established system of letting Taylor handle the offensive plays for the upcoming 2024 season.
The Jaguars’ offense showed less productivity in 2023 compared to their performance in 2022, which was when both Pederson and Taylor split play-calling duties.
Many factors beyond the play-calls themselves were attributed to the decline in performance, as shared by Pederson earlier in the offseason.
One of the major stumbling blocks for the Jaguars in the 2023 season was their high turnover rate.
The team lost the ball more frequently than was comfortable, throwing a wrench in their offensive momentum.
Pederson emphasized that rectifying this problem would significantly benefit the team, regardless of who held the play-calling reins come September.
With the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offense somewhat in flux, fans are waiting to see whether Pederson will opt for change or maintain the status quo.
The team’s performance on the offensive front depends heavily on the coach’s decision about who will call the plays this year.
