“I learned a lot of lessons living through the last one” Colts GM Chris Ballard Cautiously Optimistic About Anthony Richardson Rehab Progress

The departure of Andrew Luck to retirement in 2018 left a void in the Indianapolis Colts organization that they are still trying to fill.

The Colts have struggled to find a franchise quarterback for what seems like an eternity now. Jacoby Brisset, Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan were all touted to be long-term solutions but have failed to cement their places as starters. With highly-rated quarterback Anthony Richardson set to return from injury next season, the Colts are cautiously optimistic about the future.

Colts GM Chris Ballard was around to see Luck’s struggles before seeing the first overall draft pick retire at the age of 29 due to injury concerns. He is a little wiser and better prepared for Richardson’s situation.

“I lived through the last one and I learned a lot of lessons living through the last one,” said Ballard.

Richardson came out firing during his rookie season. The 21-year-old dual-threat quarterback showed off an impressive arm and an ability to elude defenders few NFL player could match. Unfortunately, Richardson lasted just four games before a shoulder injury saw him sidelined for the remainder of the season.

“He started throwing, he is on a rehab program. We are staying with whatever the doctors tell us…I’m encouraged about where he’s at,” added Ballard

Anthony Richardson rated as one of the top prospects in his draft class after a strong 2022 season with the Florida Gators. The Colts saw something special in the young man using fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft to secure the dual-threat quarterback.

Last season, Richardson finished with 577 passing yard, 136 rushing yards and 7 total touchdowns over four games.
