“We have to be better” Justin Herbert Reflects on Disappointing 5-12 Season As Los Angeles Chargers Look to Bounce Back in 2024

The 2020 NFL draft class produced an exceptional group of quarterbacks. Joe Burrow and Jalen Hurts have both reached Super Bowls over their short careers. Green Bay Packers rising start Jordan Love won a playoff game this year. Tua Tagovailoa has firmly established himself as the starter with the Miami Dolphins. Justin Herbert, however, is one quarterback that his yet to reach the lofty expectations many had placed on him.

When healthy, Herbert put up solid numbers during the 2023 season. Unfortunately, his production failed to convert into wins with the Los Angeles Chargers finishing last in the AFC West with a 5-12 record.

During a recent episode of the Chasin’ It podcast, Herbert reflected on last year and where it all went wrong for the supremely talented Chargers roster.

“We have to be better,” said Herbert, “We have to learn from these mistakes and sometimes you have to go through things like that to know better and to learn and to grow.”

The 25-year-old believes last year’s disappointment will only improve this group down the line.

“I know that we’re going to be better because of it. The guys in that locker room are going to be tighter together, we’re going to be closer and we know what we need to fix now,” added Herbert.

Over four seasons with the Chargers, Herbert has amassed and incredible 17,223 passing yards and racked up 114 touchdowns.

Newly-appointed head coach Jim Harbaugh has been tasked with steadying the ship for a Chargers franchise that has underperformed over the last decade. After winning a National Championship with Michigan, Harbaugh has set his sights on glory in the NFL. He has a strong roster to work with although there are cap issues to contend with this offseason.
