Toronto Blue Jays reliever Erik Swanson’s son Toby, who was hit by a car in Clearwater Beach, Florida, has been discharged from the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital.

Toby, a four-year-old boy, was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition and is now recovering.

Swanson’s wife Madison shared the update on Toby’s progress on Instagram, expressing their gratitude for the love and support they have received.

The accident occurred near the Opal Sands Resort, involving a valet driver operating a 2024 Ford Expedition.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Details about Toby’s injuries were not disclosed.

Madison Swanson also thanked the first responders, pedestrians who assisted, and the staff at the hospital for their exceptional care.

She emphasized that someone had been watching over Toby throughout this ordeal.

The Blue Jays manager, John Schneider, mentioned that Swanson would be with his family as Toby continues to recover.

Madison Swanson expressed her overwhelming appreciation for the support they have received, stating that they see and hear everyone who has reached out to them.

Erik Swanson, who was acquired by the Blue Jays in a trade with the Seattle Mariners in November 2022, had a successful first season with the team in 2023.

The 30-year-old right-hander appeared in 69 games, recording a 2.97 ERA, four saves, and 75 strikeouts in 66⅔ innings.

The Toronto Blue Jays will begin their 2024 season on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays on March 28.

Toby Swanson’s condition has improved since the accident, and he is no longer in the PICU.
