Jason Kelce announces retirements; says “I consider it a blessing to play in the most passionate sports town in America”

Jason Kelce bid farewell to his illustrious 13-season career with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday. The 36-year-old center celebrated not only for his performance on the field but also for his charismatic personality and podcast hosting, officially hung up his cleats at the Eagles’ NovaCare Complex.

Kelce, sporting a sleeveless Eagles T-shirt, struggled to contain his emotions during the press conference, attended by his parents, Ed and Donna, and brother Travis. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni observed from behind the reporters as Kelce, after wearing his heart on his sleeve for 45 minutes, ultimately revealed his decision to retire.

Kelce began by expressing gratitude for playing in the City of Brotherly Love, calling it a “blessing.” Despite acknowledging the challenges of playing in a city known for its intense sports culture, he emphasized the unique bond between the Eagles and their fans.

“Some people struggle to play in this city, they can’t handle the boos, the media, or our fans. I consider it a great blessing to play in the most passionate sports town in America,” Kelce said. He spoke of the city’s sense of urgency to win, appreciating the fans’ passion that fueled the organization’s relentless pursuit of success.

Reflecting on his journey, Kelce emotionally recalled the draft night when he received a call from then-Eagles’ head coach Andy Reid, informing him of his selection as the 191st overall pick. He vividly described his father’s tearful reaction, marking the realization of a dream.

Kelce drew a parallel to his brother Travis, who was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs two years later. The emotional bond between the Kelce brothers became a central theme, with Jason recounting shared moments of joy and tears as both siblings achieved their NFL dreams.

Acknowledging the poetic twist of fate that led him to the “City of Brotherly Love,” Kelce reflected on the profound bond he shares with Travis. The Ohio native credited his brother for making him stronger, tougher, and smarter throughout their football-filled lives.

The emotional climax of Kelce’s speech came when he revisited the heartbreak of losing to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII. Despite the pain, he found solace in the pride of seeing his brother, Travis, emerge victorious once again.

“We have a small family – no cousins, one aunt, one uncle – it was really my brother and I our whole lives. We did almost everything together: competed, fought, laughed, cried, and learned from each other,” Kelce shared.

As Jason Kelce bids farewell to the gridiron, his impact on the Philadelphia Eagles and the city’s passionate fanbase will undoubtedly be remembered as a defining chapter in the team’s storied history.
