Boston Red Sox in talks to secure Long-Term Deal for 24-Year-Old Pitcher Brayan Bello Beyond 2028

The Boston Red Sox are invested in doing what it takes to keep their winning team intact, even if that means looking at a potential long-term contract extension for right-handed pitcher, Brayan Bello.

This decision aligns with their philosophy of nurturing homegrown talent, effectively adding some much-needed stability to their rotation.

24-year-old Bello is emerging as a strong contender for the Opening Day starter role for the Red Sox.

With Lucas Giolito’s recent elbow injury, which may leave him benched for 2024, Bello’s importance to the team is emphasised further.

Though the details of the extension are yet to be finalised, sources share the potential deal will secure a commitment from Bello beyond 2028.

The Red Sox’s track record with homegrown starting pitchers has been somewhat lacklustre over the past decade, with Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz being renowned exceptions.

Their successful presence a reminder of the overdue need for the franchise to produce a reliable arm.

Bello, who displayed potential in 2023 following a brief stint in 2022, could be the response to that need.

In the last season alone, Bello boasted a 4.24 ERA, 1.338 WHIP, 132 strikeouts and a 3.1 WAR in 28 starts, standing out in Boston’s rotation at a time when Chris Sale was battling injuries.

Before the All-Star break, Bello had a 3.04 ERA with 6-5, initiating talks of him being a potential dark horse for the Cy Young award.

Despite some struggle towards the end of the season when Boston’s performance took a hit, Bello’s breakthrough season showcased the value he could bring to the team.
