The New Orleans Saints are trying to weave some magic into the salary cap riddle and by restructuring Tyrran Mathieu’s contract they could ease the roster pain.
The safety will cost the Saints $12 million this year but cutting him will only earn the Saints a $1.7 million saving off the cap.
A restructure would mean a bigger save on the cap though.
It makes sense to keep the Honey Badger, who was the 69th pick by the Cardinals in 2013.
The Saints may be selling themselves short in the medium to long term as they try get their 2024 cap structure right, but that is next year’s problem.
