Patrick Beverley reveals he taught James Harden the step-back

Milwaukee Bucks guard Patrick Beverley dropped a surprising revelation on his podcast, claiming that he is the one responsible for teaching Los Angeles Clippers star James Harden the iconic step-back move.

Beverley shared this tidbit after the Bucks secured a 113-106 victory over the Clippers on Monday evening. According to Beverley, the interaction that sparked this revelation occurred when he executed a step-back over Harden during the game, prompting the former Rockets teammates to engage in a conversation.

In recounting the exchange, Beverley stated that after hitting the step-back shot, Harden inquired about its origin. Beverley humorously claimed that he told Harden he invented the move during his three-year stint overseas before joining the NBA, and that Harden was influenced by this move during their time together with the Houston Rockets.

Patrick Beverley, who played professionally in Greece and Russia before joining the NBA in 2012, shared five seasons with James Harden on the Rockets. The duo became teammates in 2012, marking Harden’s first season in Houston following a trade from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Their partnership with the Rockets lasted until 2017 when Beverley was part of a seven-player trade that brought Chris Paul to Houston. Over the years, James Harden has become synonymous with the step-back three-pointer, using it to amass three scoring titles, make 10 All-Star Game appearances, and secure the 2017-18 NBA MVP award.

While Harden’s role has evolved with the Clippers, with a decreased emphasis on scoring, the step-back remains a potent weapon in his offensive arsenal as he aims to contribute to the Clippers’ quest for their first-ever NBA championship.
