According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, “Source: The #Broncos are bringing back one of their own, signing safety PJ Locke to a 2-year deal worth $7M base and a max value of $9M. Justin Simmons out, Locke is back.”
As an undrafted free agent, Locke had signed with Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019; however, during final roster cuts, he was waived by the squad. In 2019, the safety was signed to the Broncos practice squad but was later waived and then re-signed again.
Locke made his NFL debut in the Week 1 game against the Tennessee Titans and he was later promoted to active squad in September 2020. As per Broncos Wire, last season, Locke registered 53 tackles, five pass breakups, two forced fumbles, three sacks, and one interception throughout twelve games.
The Broncos have Locke and Caden Sterns as their starting safety for the next season. Last year, Sterns had suffered a torn patella tendon against the Las Vegas Raiders however he is expected be healthy for the upcoming season. Other safeties, such as Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson, have been let go by the Broncos. Other safeties now with the squad are also JL Skinner and Delarrin Turner-Yell.
