Patriots Finalizing Trade To Send QB Mac Jones to Jaguars After Underwhelming Three-year Stretch in New England

After two decades of success with the legendary Tom Brady at the helm, New England was never going to be an easy place for Mac Jones to make a name for himself. On Sunday, NFL insider Adam Schefter confirmed that the Patriots are finalizing a trade to move Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars after a turbulent three-year stretch.

Schefter confirmed that the deal would not take place until the new league season officially starts on Wednesday and the trade is still pending a physical. Per sources, the Patriots could receive a sixth-round pick in exchange for Mac Jones.

The Patriots had high hopes for Jones when they used the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to select the former Alabama quarterback. Jones has struggled since making the move to the pros and has won just 18 of the 42 games he has started in the league. After a strong rookie season, head coach Bill Belichick opted to stick with Jones but a 4-13 2023 season (Jones finished with 2-9 record) forced the organization to explore other avenues.

Over three seasons in the NFL, Jones has thrown for a total of 8918 yards, 46 touchdowns, 36 interceptions with a 66.1 completion percentage. He has started 43 games for the organization with his only playoff appearance ending in an embarrassing 47-17 loss against division rivals the Buffalo Bills.

Jones was born and raised in Jacksonville and a fresh start in his hometown could be just what the 25-year-old needs at this stage of his career. He will back up 2022 Pro Bowler Trevor Lawrence, a former the first overall draft pick who is set to being his fourth season with the Jaguars.
