Rudy Gobert recently pointed fingers at veteran referee Scott Foster, accusing him of manipulating the result of a game. In reaction to this accusation, Gobert was fined a sizable $100,000 by the league.

On Pardon the Interruption, co-host Tony Kornheiser sharply criticized NBA’s officiating situation. Expressing severe concerns, he said this incident could trigger a ‘crisis’ for NBA.

Kornheiser referenced the game-fixing scandal involving former referee Tim Donaghy.

His involvement in a game-fixing scandal in the mid-200s brings back alarming echoes and adds validity to Gobert’s claims.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s integrity is in question amid this disorder. According to Kornheiser, he must act quickly to stamp out any trace of doubt over the legitimacy of games.

“I believe Adam Silver has a crisis right now,” Kornheiser said. “(Gobert) is saying the guy is taking money. There’s an integrity to the game. You can say he’s joking, you can say he doesn’t believe it, but he’s saying it. And Adam Silver has this in the closet with Tim Donaghy. So you’ve got to go out there and make sure the public doesn’t think (he’s right). In hindsight, I’m not sure the fine was enough.”

This issue isn’t unique to basketball. The recent scandal involving NFL wide receiver Calvin Ridley, suspended for betting on other teams’ games, shows these challenges are widespread in sports.

Like Kornheiser highlighted, this isn’t the first time NBA referees have been accused of dishonest practices.

The disparity in earnings between referees and players can potentially incite unethical possibilities.

From athletes to journalists to referees – everyone involved in sports has a duty to uphold its integrity.

With sports gambling becoming increasingly mainstream, the responsibility to steer this era towards fairness is crucial.
