The Los Angeles Dodgers made a major controversy this offseason by signing the coveted free agent Shohei Ohtani, a versatile two-way superstar. While Ohtani will be focusing solely on his hitting this year as he recovers from a torn UCL, he remains one of the most formidable hitters in baseball.

Despite Ohtani’s undeniable talent and impact on the game, ESPN’s recent release of their Top 100 players in MLB raised eyebrows by ranking him at a surprising No. 9. Many fans and analysts question this placement, wondering how Ohtani could possibly be ranked outside of the top five.

Although Ohtani won’t be taking the mound this season, his prowess as a slugger and hitter is unmatched. His ability to crush homers at any given at-bat puts him in a league of his own at the plate. In the 2023 season, Ohtani showcased his hitting dominance by leading the majors in slugging percentage (.654) and OPS (1.066), while also topping the American League with 44 home runs despite limited plate appearances.

As the Dodgers’ standout player, Ohtani is a key reason why they’re considered favorites to contend for the World Series title. His presence generates immense excitement and anticipation among fans.

Placing Ohtani outside of the top five is considered by many to be a disservice to his talent and contributions to the game. With a focused offensive season ahead, Ohtani has the potential to secure his third MVP award and first in the National League. Doubting his position among the league’s elite players seems unfounded, as Ohtani’s exceptional skills speak for themselves.
