Sports docuseries have become the hottest trend and Apple TV is the latest streaming company to get in on the action. On Wednesday, Deadline reported that Apple TV have agreed to a first-look deal with director Matthew Hamachek.
Hamachek directed and produced Dynasty: New England Patriots, a new docuseries covering the team’s successful 20-year spell from the early 2000’s to 2020. The success of the series has obviously propelled Hamachek’s reputation and the popular streaming site plans to continue to work with the director on upcoming projects.
Led by five-time Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady and legendary head coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots set the standard in the NFL over the previous two decades winning six Super Bowls between 2002-2019.The 10-part docuseries provides an in depth look at the team’s success and provides some fascinating insights.
This is not not first sports based project Matthew Hamachek has worked out. He also directed Tiger, an HBO documentary about the life of golfer Tiger Woods.
The move from Apple is in line with other first-look deals like those that were signed with David & Jessica Oyelowo, Mimi Leder, and Dennis Lehane.
Amazon has invested heavily in the sports genre recently with several series related to the NFL, MLB and NBA released over the last few years. Netflix has also had great success with shows like Michael Jordan’s The Last Dance and Sunderland Till I Die.
