Sources shared with ESPN on Wednesday, that Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams was diagnosed with two stress fractures in his back and is out for three months.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan’s reports on the injury news on the two-time All-Star have been confirmed by the team as per the updates.

Williams has already been named a two-time NL Reliever of the Year and owns a career ERA of 1.89. He was scheduled to see a back specialist on Wednesday after feeling persistent discomfort in his lower back this spring.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy shared on Sunday, Williams was given imaging and received an initial opinion from Brewers medical personnel last week, which showed nothing to be alarmed.

“He’s dealt with it for a couple of weeks. It just doesn’t feel right, so we wanted to get it looked at by a specialist. We just figured, Why not take every precaution?”

Sources mentioned Williams is expected to make a full recovery without surgery and return mid-season, he’ll be out from throwing for six weeks and then start a slow buildup.

Per reports, his back issues started in September, but with Milwaukee amid a pennant race, he pitched through them, he even took a month off before starting his off season program.

He won the NL Rookie of the Year award in 2020 and made his first All-Star team in 2022 also repeated the honor last year, going 8-3 with a 1.53 ERA in 58⅔ innings.

Williams is due to make $7 million this season and will be a free agent after the 2025 season.
