49ers sign veteran QB Josh Dobbs to one-year deal

The San Francisco 49ers have signed quarterback Joshua Dobbs to a one-year contract worth $2.25 million for the 2024 season, with an additional $750K in play-time incentives.

Dobbs will likely serve as the backup quarterback behind starter Brock Purdy, taking over for Sam Darnold who signed with the Minnesota Vikings.

Last season, Dobbs started eight games for the Arizona Cardinals after being traded from the Cleveland Browns.

Although he had a strong start, completing 62.8% of his passes for 1,569 yards and eight touchdowns, Dobbs also had 12 turnovers and the Cardinals lost seven of those eight games before benching him.

He was then traded to the Vikings as an emergency backup. Despite limited practice time, Dobbs led the Vikings to two victories and gained a national cult following due to his background in aerospace engineering, earning the nickname the “Passtronaut.”

However, his performance declined, and he was benched in Week 14. Over his NFL career, Dobbs has played for four teams and thrown for 2,920 yards, with 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

The addition of Dobbs strengthens the 49ers’ quarterback room, providing veteran experience.
