New York Giants Were Unwilling to Guarantee Russell Wilson Starting Role over Daniel Jones

Russell Wilson’s fall from grace has been rapid and extremely public. Wilson is a nine-time Pro Bowler and went to back-to-back Super Bowls with the Seattle Seahawks. After a gruelling spell with the Denver Broncos, the 35-year-old finds himself battling to hold on to a starting quarterback position in the NFL.

It has only been two years since the Denver Broncos gave up Noah Fant, Shelby Harris, Drew Lock, two first-round picks, two second-round picks and a fifth-round pick. The one-sided trade is considered one of the most lopsided in NFL history.

Since his disastrous spell in Colorado, Wilson has been on the market for a new team. The New York Giants were rumored to be interested in the veteran quarterback but talks stalled earlier this year. According to a recent piece in The Athletic, the Giants met with Wilson but were unwilling to provide a guarantee that he would start for the organization, which turned out to be a dealbreaker for Wilson.

The Giants signed a massive four-year, $160 million contract with their former first round pick Daniel Jones during the 2023 offseason. Jones struggled with injuries last year but is expected to be healthy for the 2024 season. The Giants seem committed to the former Duke quarterback for the foreseeable future.

Russell Wilson’s decision to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers makes more sense now. The Steelers traded Kenny Pickett shortly after signing Wilson and it appears he will being the season as the starter.

Wilson finished the 2023 season with 3070 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and a 66.4 completion percentage with the Broncos.
