“You know I want that job” Doug Gottlieb Vies for Oklahoma State Basketball Coach Role, Despite Athletic Department’s Resistance

Doug Gottlieb, the well-known host of Fox Sports Radio, has made no secret of his ambition:

he wants to wear the mantle as the next head basketball coach at Oklahoma State, the university where he enjoyed star status as a player from 1997-200.

Gottlieb first put his name forward for the esteemed role back in 2017 just a day after being signed on by Fox.

However, the Cowboys steered their choice toward Mike Boynton. Fast forward to today, with Boynton having been dismissed after seven seasons, Gottlieb is once again stepping forward as a contender for the role.

On “The Sports Animal”, a regular sports broadcast on Oklahoma City’s WWLS, Gottlieb claimed himself to be the perfect fit for the position.

“You know I want that job,” Gottlieb said (via The Oklahoman). “(I understand) what we have, what we need, what needs to be fixed, how to get the culture back in line, how to bring back the alumni, how we need to connect better with Stillwater and with the students and all of Oklahoma. I fully believe I can fill up the gym and I can get the NIL.”

Despite this enthusiastic self-endorsement, however, the OSU athletic department seems to harbor a different opinion.

The Oklahoman reported confirmation that Gottlieb won’t be considered for the job. Although officially excluded from contention, Gottlieb continues to make his case publicly.

If the right supporters within the university circle back him, the tide could still turn in his favor.

It’s not that Gottlieb lacks any coaching credentials. He has proven his mettle at the AAU level and has been successful on the international stage.

Having led the U.S. men’s basketball team to a gold medal at the Maccabiah Games in both 2017 and 2022.

“I understand anyone’s hesitance when you haven’t seen me draw up a play,” Gottlieb told WWLS. “I get it. It’s different. But if you want a different result, you have to try a different path. That’s life 101.”

During a 2021 episode of his podcast “All Ball”, Gottlieb confessed that he had applied for the head coaching job at Wisconsin-Green Bay.

His revelation was more than just specific career news – Gottlieb made it clear that his ultimate career goal is to coach college basketball.

“That’s what I want to do,” Gottlieb said. “But it has to be the right thing. It has to be the right AD and you have to hit the right notes with the right message.”
