He started 38 of his 63 appearances this season but will be left out for the remainder of the season as announced before the Pistons’ home game against the Indiana Pacers.
As per the update, Thompson was reported to be cleared by the Pistons team physician to resume conditioning work and is expected to resume non-contact basketball activities toward the end of the season.
He is expected to gradually ramp up over the summer in preparation for a full return next season, and the franchise is optimistic that his long-term prognosis will be good.
This season after being selected with the fifth overall pick of the 2023 NBA Draft, Thompson, averaged 8.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 63 games (38 starts).
The Pistons had selected Thompson with the fifth overall pick after spending two seasons in Overtime Elite. His twin brother, Amen, was selected by the Houston Rockets with the No. 4 pick.
Before news broke out on Wednesday, Thompson had already missed five consecutive games, initially with asthma, before his status was updated to a vaguer “illness medical”.
The team also announced center Isaiah Stewart will sit out the rest of the season due to a right hamstring strain. He suffered the injury during the third quarter of Detroit’s 119-94 loss to the host Boston Celtics on Monday.
