The Cleveland Browns new backup quarterback Jameis Winston is already hard at work for next season.
Winston signed a one-year deal with the Browns and will be back up to franchise tag player Deshaun Watson.
Speaking this week the former number one overall pick in 2015 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was effusive of his praise for Watson and the rest of the team.
He played 70 out of 72 games for the Bucs before being backup to Drew Brees at the Saints. He was expected to start in 2022 but ruptured his ACL. He was injured again early in the next season but was kept out then team by Andy Dalton and Derek Carr.
“The biggest thing about this relationship is not only is this going to be a credible relationship because me and him have both had a lot of success throughout our football career, but it’s going to be a relatable experience with us both being African-American quarterbacks out of the deep South,” Winston said.
“So I’ve experienced some of the certain things that he’s experienced throughout his career, which allows him to be able to depend on me or to lean on me to different specific avenues that he might want to pursue or any questions that he might have. But one of the biggest things that I’m bringing to Deshaun is just really support and encouragement because he has achieved so much and that’s why he is this organization’s franchise quarterback.”
Whether he will be the man this season depends on injuries and form to Watson, but Winston knows he will not start and he is okay with it.
