Retired NFL punter Dustin Colquitt recently revealed an intriguing conversation he had with Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid, shedding light on the significance of having a sizable posterior in professional football.
In a recent report by The Athletic, journalist Josh Kendall delved into the longstanding correlation between NFL performance and the size of players" behinds. While this connection might seem unconventional, it has been a key factor in scouting evaluations for many years. Within NFL circles, the term “high butt factor" (HBF) is often mentioned in scouting reports.

The significance of this factor stems from the biomechanics of explosive movements, as explained by VCU assistant professor Dr. Alexandra DeJong Lempke. She highlighted that the glutes play a primary role in generating power, emphasizing that larger muscles in this area contribute to greater force production. This principle extends beyond positions traditionally associated with bulk, such as lineman or running back.
Colquitt shared an anecdote from his time with the Chiefs, recalling Reid"s emphasis on punters also developing robust lower muscles. According to Colquitt, Reid stressed the importance of maintaining a solid physique, particularly in the posterior region, even for specialists like punters. Reid"s advice to Colquitt was clear: “Punters have to have big butts. As soon as you start to look like you"re going downhill from a physique standpoint, you"re out of here. Keep that ass going."
