“All the options are still open for us” Patriots Head Coach Jerod Mayo Unwilling to Commit to QB in Early Rounds of 2024 Draft

Jerod Mayo has been with the New England Patriots organization since 2008 but finds himself in the hot seat this year. The newly appointed head coach has been tasked with revitalising an organization that has struggled since the departure of legendary quarterback Tom Brady. The Patriots hold the third pick in the upcoming NFL draft and Mayo understands that the quarterback position is one that need to be addressed.

On Saturday, Washington Commanders’ coach Dan Quinn hinted that the team would likely draft a quarterback but kept all options open stating the team would keep communication lines open in case there is an offer “that you just couldn’t refuse.” The Commanders currently hold the second pick with the Chicago Bears holding the first overall pick.

Jerod Mayo and the Patriots now seems to be taking a similar stance. Speaking with NFL Network’s Steve Wyche on Sunday, the head coach stated that while a quarterback was essential, the organization is yet to commit on using their early draft pick on the position.

“It’s the priority right now. But with that being said, you have to really be in love with the guy to take him at No. 3. So really all the options are still open for us,’ said Mayo.

With former first-round pick Mac Jones traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this year, Jacoby Brissett would likely be the team’s starter.

If the Patriots do decided to select a quarterback, this would be the draft class to do it. There are a handful of talented quarterbacks to choose from in this year’s class. USC’s Caleb Williams is set to be the first overall pick but Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Michael Penix Jr., J.J. McCarthy and Bo Nix could all be selected in the first round, or early in the second round.

As of today, the Pats hold the third pick and the 34th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
