New York Giants owner John Mara has signaled his willingness to back the team"s front office should they decide to draft a quarterback in the first round of the upcoming 2024 NFL draft.
Mara"s comments come amidst ongoing speculation about the Giants" quarterback situation and their potential plans for the draft.
Speaking to reporters, Mara stated, “If they fall in love with a quarterback and believe that it"s worth picking No. 6 or moving up, I certainly would support that.
Indeed, the Giants have been diligently assessing top quarterback prospects, hosting visits for North Carolina"s Drake Maye and Michigan"s J.J. McCarthy, among others.
General manager Joe Schoen also attended Caleb Williams" pro day at USC, indicating the team"s thorough evaluation process.
However, Mara"s support for drafting a quarterback does not signal a lack of faith in incumbent starter Daniel Jones.
Despite Jones"s struggles with inconsistency and a season-ending torn ACL in 2023, Mara expressed continued confidence in the young quarterback.
“I still have all the confidence in the world in him," Mara said. “Hopefully he"ll be ready to go by training camp. Yes, I think we all expect him to be the starter in 2024."
John Mara told reporters he wouldn’t stop #Giants GM Joe Schoen from drafting a QB but says here, "I think the Daniel (Jones) we saw in 2022 is the real deal. … I still have all the confidence in the world in him. … Yes, I think we all expect him to be the starter in 2024." https://t.co/JQEbTnCogq

Nevertheless, Mara emphasized a commitment to fostering competition within the team, suggesting that Jones and any potential rookie quarterback would have the opportunity to vie for the starting position in training camp.
“Why not let them both compete? Let them both compete and let the better man win," Mara remarked.
While the Giants" front office has been granted the green light to select a quarterback in the first round of the draft, Jones remains a viable contender for the starting quarterback role in the upcoming season.
