John Mara, the co-owner of Giants, expressed his support for drafting a debutante quarterback in the first round of the upcoming NFL draft in April.
Given the circumstances, this move could potentially change the dynamics of the team. Speculations about the team’s interest in top quarterback prospects were fueled by Giants’ GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.
However, Mara’s support essentially sets the stage for an exciting draft season.
“If they fall in love with a quarterback and believe that it’s worth pick No. 6 or moving up, I certainly would support that,” Mara stated at the NFL Owners Meeting.

Mara confirmed that his GM and coach are actively scouting quarterbacks at the top of this NFL Draft. Moreover, this particular QB class is highly regarded by the team.
“They tell me it’s the most talented group to come out in years,” he said. “I know they’re looking at the quarterbacks. You’ve seen that,” Mara said. “They’ve gone to some of the pro days. We’ve had some of those guys in. I don’t think they’re even close to making a final determination yet as to which way we’re going to go on that. Those discussions will happen over the next few weeks.”
Despite the discussions about a potential new quarterback, Mara insists that he still has faith in Daniel Jones. However, he suggested that a healthy competition from a rookie is not off the table.
“Why not let them both compete? Let them both compete and let the better man win,” Mara said. “We do have confidence in Daniel. But if you have a chance to bring in another quarterback and your head coach and the general manager have a conviction about him, you go ahead and do it.”
Schoen label any trade activity at the top of the draft as ‘hypothetical’ with decisions not likely to be made until college pro days conclude and teams finalize their reviews in April.
With the interest shown by the Giants in fresh Quarterback talent, it seems highly plausible we will see a new QB this April, or at the very least.
The Giants extended a $160 million contract to their standing QB Daniel Jones just last year. Unfortunately, Jones’ incessant injury setbacks in the 2023 season have nudged the team down a new path.
Jones is currently recovering from a torn ACL with clearance expected later this offseason. He also had a neck injury that sidelined him for three games last season.
