Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr. received a one-game suspension after getting into a scuffle with Utah Jazz guard Kris Dunn during a game on Saturday. As a result, Smith Jr. will sit out the Rockets’ upcoming match against the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night.

In response to the incident, Rockets head coach Ime Udoka had some words of advice for Smith Jr. According to a report from Adam Spolane of Sports Radio 610, Udoka emphasized the importance of not resorting to throwing punches, even if provoked. He mentioned that while reacting to being grabbed is understandable, throwing punches crosses a line and leads to consequences like suspensions.

“If you’re not gonna land the punch you might as well not throw it.” said Ime Udoka on Jabari Smith Jr.

Essentially, Udoka’s message boils down to: it’s okay to play tough, aggressive basketball, and even get into heated moments on the court. However, it’s crucial to avoid actions that could harm the team, like throwing punches.

Udoka likely doesn’t mind his players being gritty or getting under opponents’ skin, as seen with players like Dillon Brooks on the team. But there’s a clear distinction between playing tough and doing something that could result in penalties or suspensions.
