On March 26, Virginia Tech announced that Kenny Brooks is departing to become the new head coach for the Kentucky Wildcats women’s basketball team.

Why did Kenny Brooks leave Virginia Tech?

Brooks had a very successful tenure at Virginia Tech, leading them to their first-ever ACC Tournament Championship and Final Four appearance in 2023, followed by the ACC regular season title in the 2024 season.

Kentucky, on the other hand, had just fired their previous coach, Kyra Elzy, after consecutive losing seasons. They were looking for a coach who could bring back the winning tradition to their program. This presented a chance for Brooks to take on a program with a strong foundation and rebuild it into a contender, potentially surpassing his achievements at Virginia Tech.

Kenny Brook’s Coaching Achievements:

  • He has led Virginia Tech to their first-ever ACC Tournament Championship and Final Four appearance in 2023.
  • He has earned the ACC regular-season title for Virginia Tech in the 2024 season.
  • He has achieved seven consecutive winning seasons at Virginia Tech.
  • He boasts a career-winning record of over 70% (517-204) across 22 seasons as a head coach.
  • He has on five Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament titles and four CAA regular-season titles during his time with James Madison University (2002-2016).
  • He has reached the NCAA Tournament ten times throughout his coaching career.
