NFL to Resume Christmas Day Games in 2024 Despite Midweek Holiday

The Christmas Day games will be active in the NFL in 2024, despite the festival falling on Wednesday. Andrew Beaton of The Wall Street Journal has reported that the league will continue to play games on Christmas Day.

He mentioned in one of his posts, “New: After the NFL previously said it wouldn’t play on Christmas this year because the holiday is on a Wednesday, the league is calling an audible. Christmas NFL will be back this year, with games played by teams that played the previous Saturday.”

According to Mark Maske of the Washington Post, “The NFL will play two games on Christmas Day in 2024, the league’s Hans Schroeder says. So the NFL will play games next season on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The teams that play in the two Christmas Day games on a Wednesday next season will play on the previous Saturday, the NFL’s Hans Schroeder says.”

Last year, the league played three games on Christmas Day. On Monday, the games played were between the New York Giants vs. Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49ers, and Miami Dolphins vs. Kansas City Chiefs.

As per Jonathan Jones of CBS, “Source to @NFLonCBS: The NFL plans to play on Christmas Day again in 2024, even though the holiday falls on a Wednesday. This is a reversal of the league’s previous stance. Christmas Day games draw massive TV ratings. @andrewlbeaton first on the report.”

The game between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers garnered more than 27.2 million viewers and it subsequently became the second most-watched Monday Night Football game, as per ESPN.

As per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, “NFL EVP for Media Distribution Hans Schroeder announced:

— There will be a Christmas Day doubleheader, despite it being on a Wednesday. “We’ve seen really some unprecedented growth.”

— Amazon will have a Wild Card playoff game this year.

— The #Eagles season opener in Brazil will air on Peacock.”

The game between the Eagles and Giants averaged 29 million viewers as per USA Today. The league, seeing the success of the Christmas Day games, has further prepared to make adjustments so that they can comeback with the successful game day.
