It had been exactly 1295 days since Pablo Sandoval recorded an hit for the San Francisco Giants in the big leagues. The Venezuelan slugger holds a special place in the hearts of Giants fans after spending 11 seasons with the club. Sandoval, known endearingly as the “Panda,” was known for his powerful hitting and the gusto with which he played the game. The powerful switch hitter was a member of three Giants World Series title sides and remains a fan favorite in the Bay Area.
On Tuesday, Sandoval shared a special moment with fans when he emerged from the dugout to a standing ovation in the sixth inning. The third baseman was visibly emotional and acknowledged the boisterous crowd with a tip of the hat.
Sandoval struggled in his first at-bat, striking out in just five pitches. On his second at-bat, however, he made sure to give the fans what they came for. The 37-year-old recorded a single off right-handed pitcher Vinny Nittoli to lead off the ninth to send to crowd into a frenzy.

“I think this is one of the most special moments I’ve had in my career, said Sandoval, per MLB.com. “I don’t know if it’s my last at-bat here, but it was great. It was unbelievable. Getting that hit was the most important thing for the fans. Not for me, but for the fans.”
Sandoval recently signed a minor league contract with the Giants but with four-time Gold Glover and 2019 All-Star Matt Chapman firmly established at the third base position, it will be difficult for the veteran to make a return to the big leagues.
Sandoval has not recorded an MLB hit since June 11, 2021 when he was playing with the Atlanta Braves. Many believes last night could have been his last appearance in a Giants uniform. If it does turn out to be his final hit for the Giants, the Panda could not have asked for a better sendoff.
