The Carolina Panthers announced on Wednesday that they’ve signed free agent pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney, though the deal terms weren’t disclosed initially. Sources later revealed that Clowney agreed to a two-year contract worth $20 million, potentially earning up to $24 million, including bonuses for reaching certain sack milestones each season.
This signing marks a homecoming for Clowney, who hails from Rock Hill, South Carolina, just a short drive from Charlotte, where the Panthers are based. He also played college football at the University of South Carolina, which is not far from Charlotte.
For the Panthers, landing Clowney fills a significant gap in their roster, especially after trading away Brian Burns. While they’ve made other signings in free agency, like D.J. Wonnum and K’Lavon Chaisson, neither has the proven track record of Clowney, known for his ability to pressure quarterbacks.

Despite interest from other teams, including the New York Jets, Clowney opted for Carolina. He’s coming off a strong season with the Baltimore Ravens, where he showcased his pass-rushing skills and durability, recording 9.5 sacks, tying his career high. His performance earned him a one-year deal with the Ravens last year, where he surpassed expectations and played in all 19 games (including playoffs).
Clowney’s journey in the NFL hasn’t been without challenges, including a rough exit from the Cleveland Browns in 2022. However, he’s a three-time Pro Bowler with an impressive career stat line, totaling 363 tackles, 52.5 sacks, and 15 forced fumbles over 10 seasons. After stints with several teams, he’ll bring his talents back home to Carolina, aiming to impact the Panthers’ defense.
