Former Lions cornerback Cameron Sutton was issued an arrest warrant for his alleged involvement in a domestic violence case, wanted for weeks by police in Florida.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office had issued his arrest warrant eleven days ago. He was absconding after being wanted on a charge of domestic battery by strangulation stemming from an incident at a house in Lutz, Florida on March 7.

On Sunday night, the veteran cornerback Sutton was reported to have turned himself into Florida authorities, which came weeks after evading police.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release,

“On Monday, March 25, 2024, Sutton’s attorney contacted HCSO’s warrant section to inform us that he was going to Tampa to turn himself in to authorities. It wasn’t until today, March 31, 2024, at 8:24 p.m. that Sutton arrived at the Orient Road Jail to turn himself in.”

Sutton will now be facing a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison. On Monday, Sutton’s attorney contacted authorities to inform them Sutton would turn himself in, which he did on Sunday.

Sheriff Chad Chronister shared in his statement,

“After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in. Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County. My thoughts are with this woman as she continues to heal from this man’s gruesome actions.”

The Detroit Lions had signed Sutton as an unrestricted free agent in 2023 on a three-year, $33 million contract, after spending his first six NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He was released on March 21, the day after the team found out about the warrant for his arrest. Speaking last week at the NFL owner’s meetings, Lions team president Rod Wood told Fox 2,

“Suggested he get counsel and do the right thing, to turn himself in. After that, we met the rest of the day and the following morning to decide to release him.”
